The Betting Problem

In the short story by Roald Dahl Man from the South is about a man wearing a white suit with a kind a like Panamanian hat. On the other side there is an american boy and a girl. All of these characters are in a Jamaican hotel. This boy has a special lighter that he says it always works. They were all sitting down and the man from the south says he would like to bet the boys lighter wont light 10 times ina row in his room. The boy will win a Cadillac and if he lost he will loose his little finger of his left hand. So the man from the south and the boy went to his room but they first asked a lady if she could bring a chopping knife and some nails. The narrator is the referee so he could count how many time the lighter lighted. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight the narrator said until the old mans wife came and said Carlos! She didn't want Carlos to keep betting so she took the chopping knife. It turned out that the Cadillac wasn't his it was her wife's. Also the narrator saw that the wife only had two fingers in her left hand.

"It was a fine garden with lawns and beds of azaleas and tall coconut palms, and the wind was blowing strongly through the tops of the palm trees making the leaves hiss and crackle as though they were on fire. I could see the clusters of big brown nuts handing down underneath the leaves."

This is a very good example of imagery because of how Roald Dahl uses his vocabulary and the precise words. In this quote you can see the appliance of the sense of sight, hear that creates an image in our heads and how the setting looks like. I like how Roald Dahl uses imagery and the senses to have a better understanding.

Just then I noticed a small, oldish man walking briskly around the edge of the pool. He was immaculately dressed in a white suit and he walked very quickly with little bouncing strides, pushing himself high up onto his toes with each step. He had on a large creamy Panama hat, and he came bouncing along the side of the pool, looking at the people and the chairs.
He stopped beside me and smiled, showing two rows of very small, uneven teeth, slightly tarnished. I smiled back.
"Excuse pleess, but may I sit here?"

Roald Dahl uses a very good characterization describing every detail of the character. In this quote you can imagine an old man walking by a pool. later on when he talks you can see how Roald Dahl spells wrong the words so when the reader reads he can infer where this character is from.

This story Man from the South is my favorite because of the way the author uses building suspense throughout he story. Also this was the easiest story to imagine in my head thanks to Roald Dahl use of imagery and to understand the characters personality his characterization.

Memories of Pleasure

Jonas is really enthusiast to try to explain his new and wonderful memories but is not possible. Until one night Jonas asked his parents if baby Gabe can sleep in his room so his parents can rest and sleep. His parents agreed and the night came. For some hour baby Gabe was able to sleep until he woke up. Jonas tried to transmit the memory of a sailboat in a calm ocean. Baby Gabe was able to sleep really good. One day Jonas entered the Annex room and realized that the Giver was suffering so he said he will come later unless there was something I can do.. The Giver wasn't really happy of doing this. HE transmitted the memory of war. Jonas vomited and felt terrible. Also a kid was asking Jonas for water.

Jonas was seeing colors daily and tried to transmit it to Asher. But it just wasn't possible.Throughout the couple chapters Jonas starts to realize the real importance of his job He understood that The Comitee of Elders need the Giver to nhelp them in problems so they need The Givers wisdom. Jonas was curious to know what was The Givers favorite memory. The Giver gave him the memory which he inferred LOVE and FAMILY. Jonas was unfamiliar with Grandparents staying with the family unit.

Experience of Memories

Jonas experience with color RED
Jonas has experienced new memories thanks to his new training. He is experiencing new memories that none of the community knows. In his first training day he experienced the memory of SNOW. The old man touched Jonas back and passed the memory. Jonas had an inquiry that was that everyone told him that the training will be painful because he wasn’t experiencing pain. The giver told him that lets do one last memory. So Jonas was in the sun so he experienced the memory of a sunburn. Jonas was surprised with all these memories but unable to tell. But before this he got a number of rules that he had to accomplish and one of them was to not interact with his family in the morning ceremony. Also he had to and could do: he can lie, do not apply medication unless it doesn’t have to do with training, not permitted to apply for release and etc…when walking with Fiona after school going to they’re jobs Jonas stated to see what had happened to the apple. When he was talking to Fiona he noticed that something changed in Fiona’s hair. The effect of this event caused that Jonas got 1 minute late to his second day of training. He was allowed to ask any questions so he asked The Giver what happened to Fiona’s hair. The Giver said that he was experiencing the color red.

Sled, he knew abruptly. He was sitting on a thing called SLED. And the sled itself seemed to be poised at the top of a long, extended mound that rose from the very land where he was. Even as he thought the word "mound," his new consciousness told him HILL.

When I read this part I was so amazed by how the community was so boring! Also this reminded me of the fun I experienced last Christmas when I rode a sled. This quote surprised me because I wanted to know what is in the mind of the Elders. There cannot be a successful community without having fun or experiencing new things.

My final thoughts are that people should experience fun because were there is pains there's pleasure and were there's pleasure there is pain and fun.

Training Required for Receiver

In chapter 5 to 8 there was a lot of important things. One of this important things was the ceremony of twelve. I really liked this chapter because I was surprised when the elders skipped Jonas assignment. When all of the assignments were given the Elders skipped Jonas assignment. this made me think that something was wrong but later in the book Jonas got the assignment of Receiver of Memories. Before all this Jonas is starting to grow up and feeling stirrings. stirrings are against the rules so for more that Jonas enjoyed them he has every morning to drink some pills so he doesn't start to feel them again.

This quote made me think of how hard is it to be a Receiver. in page 62 The Elder said "Only one of us here today has ever undergone the rigorous training required of a Receiver. He, of course, is the most important member of the Committee: the current Receiver. It was him who reminded us, again and again, of the courage required." When I read this I was really amazed of the hard work that Jonas has to do. In the beginning I thought that being a Receiver was a simple job for intelligent people but know I realize that the way that the Elder describes the hard work I thought immediately
that Jonas is going to feel pain.

The Giver is a really interesting book that has taught me some things. One of these things is the importance of self-sacrifice that is when you work hard and sometimes even work harder than supposed all this hard work is going to pay off. I thought of this because every child has to do volunteer hours so if you do them right then you will get a good and well paid assignment.

Summary and Textual Reference

The Giver

What has happened so far is that Jonas is a man that lives in a community that has a lot of rules and is very strict. In this community there is a lot of ceremonies. One of them that Jonas is really nervous about the Ceremony of Twelve that is like a graduation. In this community your future is very important so every kid before their Ceremony of Twelve all kids have to do volunteer hours. Jonas, Asher and Fiona are volunteering to go to The Old. In The Old Jonas had already volunteer there so he knew some people. The Old was a place were old people stayed before they were released. Jonas was bathing and old lady and she started to talk about a birthmother named Edna. Birthmothers are ladies that have kids and these kids are given to a mother and father in the ceremony of One. The old lady's name was Larissa so she started to talk about meaningful life. There was a man named Roberto which had a meaningful life because has a good jobs and raised two wonderful kids.

My textual reference is "He made a lovely good-bye speech. And several of us made little speeches wishing him well. I didn't, though. I've never been fond of public speaking." My reaction to this was that its very impressing that someone cant be fond to public speaking. I don't like to talk much in public but not as exaggerated as Larissa. In my opinion Larissa should've said something to Roberto when he was being released.

My final thoughts are that I think that the released people they are killed. I think this because why do they do a GOOD-BYE just for a release. Also this is in my mind because people wouldn't be so drastic about a release unless is killing.

1st Blog Post

What I think this book is about is that this world were Jonas lives everything is destroyed and its a community that doesn't know about the world. After I "interviewed" the book I thought that The Giver is a man who remembers everything of the past. I would describe it as a world or community of lost people.
What Lowry is trying to say is that this book is for the children of the future that they shouldn't let the government control the world/ community and also so they don't make the same mistakes that Jason or The Giver makes during the book. (What I think).
This book is going to be about a community that has a lot of problems and The Giver is a very important man in the community that helps the community to be a better place. And Jonas is a man who has a lot of knowledge.
